Today, in many countries it is Safer Internet Day. This day is designated to making the use of the internet safe, especially for our children. It is a fact that knowledge is power, both for children and adults. However, knowledge is not the same as awareness. It is our resposibility as parents to closley monitor our children's exposure to the internet.
Here is my two cents: My family was all gathered in my bathroom getting ready for church, when my 4 year old daughter mele asked me if she could "Log on" to playhouse disney.com. I told her no...and that's when my 6 year old son told me and my husband a piece of devastating information. He said that while I was getting ready the other day, Mele and him were playing with the computer and he typed in xxxxx.com......and that his sister and him saw naked women, and it was really nasty.
What?
O.K. First of all this happened with out me even knowing it at all! In a matter of minutes... And what possesses a 6 year old boy, with no Internet experience ( Seriously, Mele knows her way around her kid web sites, but Peni, never goes on the computer)to type in xxxxx.com. Why did he chose the letter x? What if he typed in rrrrr.com. I mean seriously...it that just our Moala family bad luck, or is Satan hangin over my child's shoulders at such a young age? I am so sad that my babies were exposed to such filth, and I pray that whatever images they saw, will fade from their memory.
I blame myself for this happening. I havn't exposed Peni to the internet, and havn't had the talk about dangerous things being out there. Because this happened on a work laptop, I didn't have any parental controls on the computer. I wasn't paying attention to my kids while I was getting ready. Well, I just want everyone to know that I want to do better. I will do anything in my power to never let this happen again. My children are not allowed to touch a computer without my permission, and if they are on, i will always be within eyes distance of the screen. Will this ever happen to them again? Probably. This kind of smut is out there everywhere, but while I can, I want to protect my children in every way possible and teach them, when faced in this situation again.....to run! ( and tell mom and dad right away)And to listen to the quiet voices inside of them that tell them that this type of material is from Satan, and is not to be taken lightly.

Oh my gosh Jenna...that's terrible. That's one of my worst fears, so my kids rarely go on. The other day mele was over here and was like, "Sarah, I can go on your blog." and I didn't think I heard her right and was like "what did you say?" and she was like "i can go on your blog, I just go on my moms page and find your page and click on it!!" Too funny!!
The computer is scary to adults too. The first time I went on "Craigs List" I thought Eric said -Craig List-- don't ever make that mistake--it is a horrible porn site. I'm sure they chose the name as lots of people like myself would leave the "s" off Craigs and run into the site.
